Melissa Chiu is director of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. She is a leading authority on international contemporary art with a focus on the Asia-Pacific. She has curated exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art including Zhang Huan: Altered States (2007), The Art of China’s Cultural Revolution (2008), Yang Fudong: Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest (2009) and Bound Unbound: Lin Tianmiao (2012), with accompanying catalogues. Chiu has authored and edited several books and catalogues on contemporary art, including Contemporary Art in Asia: A Critical Reader (MIT Press, 2010) and Breakout: Chinese Art Outside China (Charta, 2007). She completed her Ph.D. with a dissertation on contemporary Chinese art at the University of Western Sydney in 2005.
