China Books Review launched in October 2023, with the mission to fill in the blanks of the China story, engage with a wealth of new writing and scholarship, and nuance coverage through close reading and insightful commentary.

Since then we have published 200 articles, including lengthy review-essays by leading voices, as well as updating full lists of all China books, hosting in-person book talks, running a monthly podcast, bimonthly book club and annual book prize, and printing a physical yearbook.

China Books Review is a non-profit endeavor, co-published by Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations and The Wire China. We make no direct revenue, and exist entirely thanks to the generosity of our sponsors.

This is where you come in! This giving season, we’re asking our readers to chip in with a tax-deductible donation to help China Books Review thrive in the years to come. It could be a one-time donation of any amount, or a recurring monthly or annual gift.

The 2024 yearbook.

As thanks, all one-time gifts of $50+ qualify to receive a complimentary issue of our current yearbook, a printed magazine collecting our best articles and art from 2024, automatically delivered if you include your mailing address below.

All recurring gifts (monthly/$10 or annual/$100) qualify to receive all future issues of the yearbook, printed every summer, for as long as your recurring gift is still active (new annual recurring gifts also receive the current issue).

This is the only way to get your hands on our yearbook, which is beautifully designed and a gorgeous way to read (or re-read) some of our best pieces.

If you’d like to show your support and thanks for our work, please select your donation option in the form below. Large gifts ($500+) will receive a personal letter of thanks from the editors, and can be earmarked for specific purposes (eg original art, the book prize).

We are so very grateful to have you as a reader. Thank you for following China Books Review these past two years. If you enjoy our fare, another way to support our work is to tell a friend about us, and invite them to follow our newsletter and social media.

Thank you!

NB: For any questions, or to cancel a recurring donation, email info@chinabooksreview.com. As we are part of Asia Society, a 501(c)(3), your gift is tax-deductible in the U.S. and many other countries.

Book Talk: Shakespeare, Tyranny and China

What do King Lear, Mao Zedong and Donald Trump have in common? How tyrants exercise power was a question of pressing concern for William Shakespeare, and is no less so in our current age. Join us on December 16 at Asia Society in New York to hear literary scholar Nan Z. Da in conversation with Shakespeare expert Stephen Greenblatt, moderated by Orville Schell.
