Ian Johnson is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of the forthcoming book Sparks: China’s Underground Historians and Their Battle for the Future. A Beijing-based correspondent for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other publications for 20 years, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on China in 2001.
